While playing Sunrisers Hyderabad at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on a slow, gripping surface, Chennai Super Kings chipped away at a target of 135 with the help of Devon Conway’s third consecutive half-century. Earlier, Ravindra Jadeja took three wickets and teamed up with MaheeshTheekshana to bowl eight overs for only 4 for 49 to stop the Sunrisers’ momentum after a strong start.
Three spinners, including Impact Sub Mayank Dagar’s left-arm spin, were part of the opposition’s team. However, despite their efficiency and two wickets, Mayank Markande, Washington Sundar, and Dagar didn’t really worry the opposing hitters. Super Kings remain third on the points standings due to the seven-wicket victory, but only on net run rate, tied on points with Royals and Super Giants.
Conway motors along
In the first ten balls he faced, Conway found the boundary three times by lofting, flaying, and punching the ball. He was, however, on 18 off 19 when Super Kings reached 37 for no loss after five overs. At that point, Marco Jansen got treatment: Ruturaj Gaikwad started the sixth over with a single, and Conway went 4, 4, 6, 4, 4.
Conway began the over with a ramp, followed by a scoop, a fortunate top-edged pull, a quick touch past the wicketkeeper, and then split the short third and point fielders to conclude the over. All of it was necessary before Sunrisers introduced spin, but it came too late. Conway reached fifty in the tenth over off of 33 balls and finished the innings undefeated on 77 with 12 fours and a six.
Sunrisers’ experiment backfires
Abhishek and Mayank Agarwal had been the openers for Sunrisers to start the season, with Brook batting in the middle order. However, Abhishek was not present for the following game. After realising Brook and Agarwal might open together, Abhishek made a comeback, but this time in the middle order. They persisted with it for one more round before dropping Agarwal to No. 6 and moving Abhishek to face Super Kings. Sadly, it didn’t succeed. Agarwal left the game after scoring his third low-six-run total in six innings, but Sunrisers were encouraged by Abhishek’s performance at the top. Sunrisers, who are ninth and one game from the midway point, are running out of time. When batting first, they have been limited to 135 two out of three occasions, and they haven’t always been competitive when chasing. There must be a click. Soon.
Chennai Super Kings 138 for 3 (Conway 77, Gaikwad 35, Markande 2-23) beat Sunrisers Hyderabad 134 for 7 (Abhishek 34, Jadeja 3-22, Akash 1-17) by seven wickets
