Marcus Stoinis’ scored 72 from 40 balls. 54 from 24 for Kyle Mayers. Pooran, Nicholas: 45 off 19. Ayush Badoni: 43 out of 24. They helped Lucknow Super Giants to 257 for 5, which is the greatest total this IPL season and the second-highest total in the history of the competition.
Atharva Taide’s explosive 36-ball 66 helped Punjab Kings make it past 200, but they were never really in the running to hit a seemingly impossible goal. Final score: Super Giants won by 56 runs, moving them up the standings to second thanks to their increased net run rate.
LSG’s batters collectively hit 27 fours and 14 sixes, which made for an impressive night for analytics.
Taide fights, but PBKS fall well short
Taide, who was brought in at No. 3 after Shikhar Dhawan left in the first over, continued to bat while his partners came and went. PBKS scored 47 runs in the first five overs, with Taide being responsible for 31 of those runs. He also scored five boundaries, including one off an Avesh Khan over with a leg-side hoick, another with a drive past mid-off, and another with a slap-through point. Shortly after the powerplay, Taide hit a massive six off Amit Mishra.
As the tenth over began, Taide reached his half-century off 26 deliveries, but by that point, PBKS’ required rate had already begun to approach 16 an over. And with six wickets in hand, PBKS needed a nearly impossible 131 from seven overs when Taide left the field after struggling on a slog-sweep off Ravi Bishnoi.
The number of boundaries scored by Livingstone, Curran, and Jitesh Sharma eventually reached 67, which is tied for the second-most in an IPL game, but the match was already over.
Lucknow Super Giants 257 for 5 (Stoinis 72, Mayers 54, Pooran 45, Badoni 43, Rabada 2-52) beat Punjab Kings 201 (Taide 66, Thakur 4-37, Naveen 3-30, Bishnoi 2-41) by 56 runs
